About Bruce Helbig
Robert Bruce Helbig (who goes by his middle
name of Bruce) is a professional golfer and golf business
manager. He has been playing golf for over 40 years.
Bruce was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Sarasota,
Florida, where he attended Riverview High School. His
college years were spent at Florida State University in
Tallahassee, where he was an Education major, with a minor
in Sports Coaching. In the 1980s, he moved to Northern
Ontario where he spent the next 20+ years playing in
hundreds of amateur tournaments. He turned pro in
Bruce is a born sportsman. Always
athletically inclined, he was a competitive swimmer as a
child, played baseball in Little League, and participated in
many other team sports (football, basketball, tennis,
volleyball and more). At age 13, he was afflicted with
Osgood-Schlatter's disease, and for a year and a half, he
was not allowed by doctors to play in heavy-contact sports
and sports that involved running.
After 18 months of
sports deprivation, a friend invited Bruce to come hit a few
golf balls into an open field with him, since this activity
would require no running. He hit 10 or 15 balls into
That was the first time he had ever held a golf club.
After that brief introduction, the friend
took Bruce to a local golf course in Sarasota. Bruce didn't even own a set of
clubs. His friend's father loaned him a set.
Bruce simply watched what his friend did and imitated him. That first time
played on a course, he shot 109. The second time he played, he
shot 101. The third time he played, he broke 100, and
never shot over 100 again. His scores continued to
drop dramatically, and for decades now, he has maintained
course averages in the 60s and low 70s.
Over the next 20+ years, Bruce won over 100
amateur tournaments from Florida to Canada. He was
employed for 15 years as General Manager of two different
golf courses in Northern Ontario, where his keen business
instincts turned the clubs around from near-insolvency into
In 2006, after years of being a family
man and raising a son, he finally turned pro. He has
played on the Florida Professional Golf Tour, the
Sunbelt Senior Tour and other professional tours across the U.S. and in
Bruce splits his time between Ontario and the
Southeastern U.S. He
offers golf lessons to both amateurs and professionals.
Through his company, RBH Golf, he seeks golf courses in need
of new management, business restructuring or physical
renovation, tapping his
own skills, expertise and proven strategies to help golf courses become
more efficient and more profitable.
